A hand rolled incense stick burning, a thin line of smoke rising in a calm room

Solkarra Living, Busselton WA

Hand rolled incense for a calmer home

Rolled by hand by families in Karangasem, Bali, from real herbs, flowers and essential oils. There is no perfume and no charcoal, so the smoke stays low and the scent settles the room instead of filling it.

8 sticks a pack. Each one burns for 2 to 3 hours.

Natural incense sticks, shipped from Western Australia

Hand rolled in Bali, packed in Busselton

Most incense sold in Australia is a blank bamboo stick dipped in perfume oil. Ours is different all the way through. Families in Karangasem, in the east of Bali, roll a paste of ground herbs, flowers, woods and resins onto each stick by hand, then scent it with essential oils. The plants are in the stick itself, so it smells like the real thing and burns slowly and evenly for 2 to 3 hours, with low smoke and a cool, soft ash.

I grew up with this incense. Across Karangasem it is lit every morning with the daily offerings, and I still light it at home in Busselton. Every stick we sell is non-certified organic, cruelty free and made without charcoal, and every pack ships in recyclable packaging from our home in Western Australia, within 1 to 2 business days. Australian orders over $75 ship free, and we post worldwide.

Incense for every room in the house

Incense burning in a calm, candle lit corner of a bedroom

Bedroom and reading nook

Low smoke matters most in a small room. Light sweet and warm incense like vanilla or cempaka an hour before bed, then open the door a crack.

Two incense sticks burning with rising smoke

Meditation and the home altar

A steady scent helps a practice settle. Grounding incense such as sandalwood, agarwood and frankincense is what we burn with our own offerings.

Bathroom and bath

Something fresh after a long day. Bright and fresh incense such as jasmine or lemongrass suits a warm, steamy room.

The handmade Paltiya incense holder with one stick burning

A holder for every room

Our Paltiya incense holder is handmade in Western Australia, in grey or grey and black, and catches the ash from a full stick.

How to light an incense stick properly

Four steps, whichever scent you choose.

  1. Light the tip. Hold a flame to the tip for a few seconds until it catches.
  2. Blow out the flame. Let it burn a moment, then blow it out gently. The tip glows red and the scent starts.
  3. Stand it in a holder. Use a holder on a heatproof surface, away from curtains, paper and anything that can catch.
  4. Let it burn down. Each stick lasts 2 to 3 hours and the ash falls cool. Never leave a lit stick alone in the room.

Every morning I light one stick with our offering. It is the first quiet minute of my day.

Our story

Why 15% of our profit goes back to Karangasem

I grew up in Karangasem and taught primary school there before I moved to Australia. The children in the villages near where our incense is rolled are loved and looked after, but many go without uniforms, lunches and classroom supplies. So 15% of the profit from every order goes back to those communities, and by 2028 we plan to start a fund for several remote schools.

Questions about our incense

What is hand rolled herbal incense?

A paste of ground herbs, flowers, woods and resins is rolled onto a bamboo stick by hand, dried, then scented with essential oils. Dipped incense is a blank stick soaked in perfume oil. Hand rolled incense carries the plant material in the stick itself, which is why it smells natural and burns slowly.

Is your incense low smoke?

Yes. There is no charcoal in our sticks, which is what makes many dipped sticks smoky, so the smoke stays low and soft. Any incense still makes some smoke, so open a window a little in a small room.

How long does one incense stick burn?

Two to three hours. Each pack holds 8 hand rolled sticks.

What incense is best for meditation?

Sandalwood, agarwood (oud) and frankincense, the three scents in our grounding incense. They are steady and warm and stay in the background while you sit.

Where do you ship, and how fast?

Every order leaves Busselton, Western Australia, within 1 to 2 business days. Australian orders over $75 ship free, and we ship worldwide. Packs fit a standard letterbox.

How should I store incense sticks?

Keep them in their pack, somewhere cool and dry and out of direct sun, so the essential oils keep their scent.

What if a scent isn’t for me?

Tell us and we’ll make it right with a refund or a replacement scent.
